Colliery In Scott County
Wm. H. Bates & Co.
This shaft is located one mile north of Winchester, on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. There have been some improvements made in this mine during the year. Iron track has been put in all the entries. Formerly the miners themselves pushed the coal to the shaft; now laborers are employed to do it. The entries are extended for a distance of 1,800 feet. The underground works are in very good order, and the ventilation good. This is a very fair quality of coal, and is seam No. 1. It is nearly all blasted with powder. The coal in 2½ feet thick. Hand-power geared drills could be very economically used here, as it is very laborious work for a miner to use the common; ordinary hand drill in such a low seam of coal.
Wm. H. Bates, Manager.

1905 Annual Coal Report 7
Fires At Mines
Dec. 19, 1904, the top works at the Wm. H. Bates mine at Winchester, Scott county, were destroyed by fire. Engine, boiler house, blacksmith shop, wagon scale, shed and locomotive chutes were all destroyed. The fan-house was untouched; all of the mules were saved, being hoisted out of the escape shaft by the men; fortunately there were no men at work in the mine when the fire broke out. The fire was also said to have originated from sparks from passing locomotives. All of the buildings destroyed have been rebuilt and the mine is now at work.

New Mines
J. McLaughlin & Co. have sunk a new shaft at Alsey, Scott county, to the No. 1 seam, which is 30 inches thick, at that place. This seam has four feet of fire clay lying directly under the coal, and under the clay is about four feet of hard limestone, then 20 feet of good potter's clay. There is a good roof over the whole. The shaft is 8 by 14 feet, 100 feet to the coal. The tower is 56 feet high. The hoisting engines are a pair of 10 by 20 inches geared about five to one; one 50-inch tubular boiler. The boiler and engine house is a substantial building. A 10-foot Crawford & McCrimmon fan is ready to be put in as soon as the air shaft is down. A 6 by 6 inch steam pump, also a feed pump, is ready for use. The coal mined here is expected to be used to convert clay into pottery, brick, tiling, etc., for which purpose the Alsey Tile & Brick Company are now building a plant near the mine.
