Coal related History of Schuyler County, Illinois 1
In the vicinity of Rushville, and also on a small branch, which heads near Pleasant View, the beds comprising the upper part of the foregoing section are found well exposed. They enclose coal seam, No 4, one of the most persistent and valuable in the Illinois coal field. It outcrops in the vicinity of Pleasant View and from thence northwesterly to Rushville, underlying the elevated plateau around and between these points, that forms the water-shed between the tributaries of Crooked creek and Sugar creek. This seam ranges in thickness from four to six feet, and in this county averages about five feet. The roof is generally a bituminous shale, sometimes containing large nodules of dark blue or black limestone, filled with marine shales.

Coal has been mined in the vicinity of Pleasant View for many years, for the supply of steamboats at Frederick four miles distant, on the Illinois river. It was first worked by tunneling into the hill where the coal outcrops, on the banks of a small stream running in Sugar creek, but has long since been worked by shafts.

This seam has also been worked for many years in the vicinity of Rushville, and in many places the shafts are not deeper than twenty-five feet. The seam has a good roof and is easily worked. Below we give the succession of strata, downward from coal, No. 4, to coal No. 3.

On Sugar creek, ten miles northeast of Rushville, No. 3 is found outcropping at several points at the base of the hills. Here it averages about three feet in thickness, with a roof of shale and sandstone. A good exposure of all the beds, down to the horizon of No. 2 coal, may be seen northeast of Pleasant View, on a small stream running into Sugar creek.

The coal No. 4 is the only seam that can be profitably worked in this county, and there is a sufficient quantity to furnish an abundant supply of coal for all the demands of the region adjacent to its outcrops, for many years. To reach this seam it is necessary to sink a shaft to a depth varying from fifty to seventy-five feet, or less, below the surface, and it is found outcropping on the head-waters of several of the small streams that drain the elevated region which it underlies.

1885 Annual Coal Report 3
Schuyler County
The mines in this county have been devoted to supplying local trades only during the year.

The most important mine at present is operated by John Karr, located about 1½ miles northeast of Rushville. The shaft is 46 feet deep, coal and water being raised by horse-power. The coal is over 5 feet thick, and is seam No. 5 of the general section. An escapement plant has been completed at this mine during the year.

Two drift mines have been in operation during the winter, one located about 5 miles east, and the other 2½ miles northeast of Rushville. Both are now abandoned.

Three drift mines were found near Pleasant View. The seam at this place is also No. 5 of the general section, and is 4½ feet thick. Only five miners were employed during the winter months, and in summer the mines are closed.

One drift mine was found near Frederick. The coal 2½ feet thick, and is probably seam No. 3 of the general section. One miner is employed in the summer and five in winter.

The two drift mines at Ray are in the their usual good condition, the entire product being used in burning the tile manufactured at this place. In the last report this seam was tabulated as No. 2; in this report it is called No. 3, the roof shales being more in accordance with those generally found in the latter seam.

Samuel Work & Company have sunk a new shaft about 2 miles northeast of the city of Rushville. They reached the coal, which is 5½ feet thick, at a depth of 53 feet below the surface June 10, 1885. A railroad track ¾ of a mile in length will be built from the Buda and Rushville branch of the C. B. & Q. to this mine.

The coal will be raised by steam power; winding machinery will be placed in position as soon as possible, and it is likely that coal will be shipped early in the fall of 1885. The operators have a lease on 130 acres, with privilege of more if they require it. The shaft is 13½ feet long, 6½ feet wide, with 3 feet partitioned off for an air chamber. The coal is similar in quality to that now being mined at Astoria, Fulton county.

1894 Annual Coal Report 6
Strikes and Suspensions
Occurred at Kerr & Sons' mine, Rushville, Schuyler county : the price paid for mining lump coal was 65 cents in summer and 75 cents in winter; The miners claimed that the price paid for mining was below the district price; after a suspension of two weeks they started to work on the gross-weight system, 45 cents per ton in the summer and 50 cents in the winter.
New Mines
John Kerr & Sons have opened a new mine at Rushville, on the Buda and Rushville branch of the C. B. & Q. Railroad. The coal was found 48 feet below the surface; seam No. 5; coal 5 feet thick, underground workings, double-entry and pillar-and-room. The equipments are from the old mine recently abandoned.

1897Annual Coal Report 8
Mine Fires
June 15. John Kerr's local mine, which is situated at Rushville, was destroyed by fire. The shaft curbing was burned out from top to bottom, and the shaft caved in and the machinery was rendered useless. Mr. Kerr immediately bought other machinery and boilers, and put down another shaft about 200 yards east of the old one. These fires at night and it is the supposition that they were the work of incendiaries.
