March 12, 192731, Jacob Karner, of Galatia, miner, age 50 years, married, was killed by a fall of coal in Saline County Coal Corporation's No. 7 mine. He leaves a widow and two children.
 
KARPINSKY
November 9, 191112, Joseph Karpinsky, of Dorrisville, miner, aged 35 years, married, employed at O'Gara Coal Co.'s mine No. 9, Dorrisville, Saline County, was loading a car at the face of his room when the draw slate gave away, falling on his head and shoulders, crushing him so that he died from the effects of the injury November 20. He leaves a widow and three children.

April 6, 192121, George Kelhorn, trip rider, age 22 years, married, was killed, in Big Creek Coal Company's No. 3 mine, by being struck by motor. He leaves a widow and one child.

July 7, 191314, Lon Keller, of Ledford, driver, aged 30 years, married, was Instantly killed in the O'Gara Coal Company's Mine No. 14, Ledford, Saline County. Deceased was coming on to motor parting with his trip of two cars and, while he was unhooking his mule, he fell in front of loads, which ran on to him. He leaves a widow and two children.

October 25, 191819, Theodore Kelly, of Eldorado, triprider, age 18 years, single, was killed by a pit car in J. K. Dering Mines Company's No. 2 mine, Eldorado.

April 25, 195256, Frederick Kendall, of Eldorado, Joy helper, aged 20 years, married, was killed by a roof fall in Peabody Coal Company's No. 40 mine. he leaves a widow.
 
KENNEDY
June 29, 191818, Robert Kennedy, of Eldorado, miner, age 44 years, married, and William Taylor, of Eldorado, miner, age 37 years, married, and Loren Whitler, of Fordville, KY., miner, age 34 years, married, were suffocated in O'Gara Coal Company's No. 1 mine. These men had opened up a sealed section of the mine and were returning when they were overcome by not having a sufficient amount of oxygen in their helmets. Kennedy leaves a widow and seven children, Taylor leaves a widow and two children, and Whitler a widow and five children.

December 21, 192021, Charles Kevish, loader, age 35 years, married, was killed by falling coal in Harrisburg Colliery Company's mine. He leaves a widow and four children.

August 28, 192630, Claude Killman, of Harco, machine runner, age 41 years, married, was killed in Saline County Coal Corporation's No. 7 mine when a chunk of coal fell down the shaft and struck him on the head. He leaves a widow and two children.

August 14, 191819, Dominic Lagood, of Eldorado, laborer, age 28 years, married, was killed by an explosion of gas in O'Gara Coal Company's No. 10 mine, Eldorado. He leaves a widow and one child.

April 30, 194549, Victor Lamandia, of Eldorado, jerryman, aged 55 years, married, was killed by a rock fall in Wasson Coal Company's No. 1 mine. He leaves a widow.
 
LANDS
July 14, 19067, E. Lands, of Dorrisville, miner, aged 22 years, single, employed at the O'Gara Coal Company's shaft No. 6, two miles south of Harrisburg. was working in the room with Harvey Duning and was killed by the same rock, in room No. 4, third east entry off of the north. The rock was 20 feet long, 12 feet wide and about 5 feet thick at the thickest place.
 
LANE
June 19, 1972. Mr. Gary Lane, age 23, of Carrier Mills, married, no dependent children came to his death at 7:20 a.m. on June 15, 1972, from a fall of roof while he was in the performance of his duties as a miner operator at the Sahara Coal Co., Mine No. 21, Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois where he had been employed for 14 months.
      Mr. Gary Lane was in the No. 5 room off of the 1st South West off the 8th Main North West off the 6th Main West inby the 2nd crosscut 76 feet, cutting the left side of the place. He had only loaded 3 buggies when the roof fell hitting him on the head, and knocking him out of the cab of the miner. The rock was approximately 16 feet wide and 17 feet long, from 0" to 6" thick. Later after the injured had been removed, the complete place fell that had not been roof bolted. The room had been driven 27 feet past the last row of roof bolts, and 29 feet wide. The 11CM ripper that Mr. Lane was operating can only mine 20 feet deep and be protected by roof bolts. This place was cut to the 27 foot depth by the preceding 3rd shift. Mr. Lane was only cutting the left side to straighten up the place. Mr. Larry Turner stated that both he and Mr. Lane had sounded the top and it was solid. Mr. Denzle Gulley, the section foreman, had examined the place only 15 minutes prior to the accident and he stated that the place was safe at that time. Mr. Lane had 5 years mining experience and 2 years experience as a miner operator. Mr. Lane was operating the ripper 7 feet beyond the last row of roof bolts. The place was 5 feet in height. Mr. Lane suffered severe back and internal injuries and also some injury to the head and face. He was brought to the surface and sent by ambulance to the Doctors Hospital in Harrisburg and immediately transferred to the Welborn Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he expired at 2:15 p.m. on June 19, 1972.
 
LANGFORD
January 10, 192933, Lacey Langford, of Harrisburg, miner, age 21 years, married, was killed in Harrisburg Coal Mining Company's No. 9 mine, by a fall of roof. He leaves a widow.
 
LANHAM
August 2, 193337, John McGraner, of Harrisburg, trackman, age 46 years, married, and Arthur Lanham, of Eldorado, age 40 years, married, were killed in Sahara Coal Company's mine.
      These men were on a scaffold recasing the air shaft, when the scaffold gave way, precipitating them to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of about 150 feet, McGraner leaves a widow and Lanham leaves a widow and four children.
 
LANZENNI
March 9, 191212, Robert Lanzenni, of Sesser, timberman, aged 33 years, married, working at Sesser Coal Co.'s mine, Sesser, Franklin County, was cleaning up a fall, which had occurred the day before. While he was working a large piece of rock broke loose and fell on him, killing him instantly. He leaves a widow and two children.

September 1, 192328, John Law, of Harco, shot firer, age 26 years, married, died from injuries received from a shot explosion the day before in Saline Co. Coal Corporation's mine No. 7. He leaves a widow and two children.

January 9, 194044, Emory Lebo, of Stonefort, timberman, age 50 years, married; killed by a fall of rock at Mine "A" of the Wasson Coal Co., leaving widow and three children.

LONG
September 6, 191112, Martin Long, trip rider, aged 19 years, single, employed at O'Gara Coal Co.'s mine No. 10, Eldorado, Saline County, was killed by falling off a moving motor on which he was riding. His left leg was run over and had to be amputated. This was on September 5, and he died the next morning.

June 9, 192121, Joseph Masey, machine helper, age 35 years, married, was killed by falling coal in Harrisburg Colliery Company's mine. he leaves a widow and four children.
 
MASSEY
December 3, 19067, N. J. Massey, of Eldorado, top foreman, aged 35 years, married, employed by the O'Gara Coal Company at mine No. 8, was fatally injured. The car on the cage had become unlocked and stopped at the top landing; Massey and others had put the car on the track and were trying to move the car so they could latch it again when they lost control of the car and it ran off the cage into the weighing hopper, catching Massey between the car and the floor sills, fracturing his skull and injuring him otherwise; the accident occurred at 2:00 p. m. and he died eight hours afterwards. He leaves a widow and three children.
 
MATTINGLEY
August 3, 191112, James Mattingley, of Dorrisville, machine helper, aged 28 years, single, was killed by falling slate in the O'Gara Coal Co.'s No. 9 mine, Harrisburg, Saline County. The machine was just finishing the last cut when a piece of slate fell.
 
MAY
January 6, 19088, Ernest May, of Ledford, shot-firer, aged 23 years, single, employed by the O'Gara Coal Company at mine No. 14, Ledford, Saline County, was fatally burned about the face, hands and body. He fired a shot which was too tightly gripped and which also had an excessive charge of powder.
 
McCLAIN / McLAIN
December 30, 191314, Wm. H. McClain, of Equality, operator, aged 60 years, married, was killed while attempting to lower the cage at his mine by hand. The night before the accident a car of coal had been hoisted and left standing on the cage over night; deceased had evidently forgotten that the car was loaded and when he attempted to lower the cage it got beyond his control and the revolving sweep struck him, causing injuries from which he died about one hour later. He leaves a widow and six children.
 
McCLANE
June 27, 19088, Harry McClane, of Eldorado, was found dead under a mine car in the O'Gara Coal Company's mine No. 10, Eldorado, Saline County. Deceased was employed as a driver; aged 32 years and single. The cause of the accident is not known, but it is supposed that he was in the act of unhitching his mule and that his foot slipped on the rail and he fell in front of the car; when he was found the car was on his head and shoulders; there was no one present when the accident occurred.

May 29, 194448, William Mee, of Harrisburg, timberman, aged 53 years, married, was killed when rock fell on him in Peabody Coal Company's No. 47 mine. He leaves a widow.

June 7, 191717, Albert Mick, of Dorrisville, miner, age 49 years, married, was killed by falling slate in O'Gara Coal Company's No. 9 mine, Dorrisville, Saline County. He leaves a widow and four children.
 
July 25, 191617, Charles N. Mick, of Dorrisville, miner, age 50 years, married, was run over and killed by a pit car in O'Gara Coal Company's No. 9 mine, Dorrisville, Saline County. Just before quitting time, deceased and his partner were walking out of the mine along the main entry which dipped at about 2½ per cent grade in the direction they were going. The last motor trip for the day came from behind them and they stepped into a man-hole until it had passed when they resumed their journey. The noise of the on-going trip prevented them from hearing the approach of two cars which had gotten away from the drivers on the parting at the top of the hill, due to a lack of sprags at the proper place and the breaking of the emergency block, and the deceased was run over, resulting in his death about two hours later. He leaves a widow and seven children.

May 19, 19088, Joseph Morris, of Harrisburg, miner, aged 40 years, married, employed by the O'Gara Coal Company in mine No. 9, Harrisburg, Saline County, was killed instantly by a piece of falling slate. Morris and his partner knew that the slate was loose and intended to take it down as soon as they had loaded their car of coal; they had started loading but had only worked a short time when the slate fell on Morris. The piece of slate was 4 by 9 feet and about 5 inches thick. He leaves a widow.

MURPHY
September 6, 197464, Mr. Douglas Murphy, of Carrier Mills, age 59, married, came to his death at about the hour of 12:30 p.m., September 6, 1974, while in the performance of his duties as Laborer at the Sahara Coal Company, Sahara No. 21, Mine, Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois.
      Mr. Murphy was pulling a cable beneath the 1st East Head off the North Belt when he became entangled in the return roller, just before the threading mechanism. His right arm and shoulder were pulled between the belt and the roller up to his neck and side. Mr. Murphy was in the belt while it was running, approximately two minutes. Mr. Emery who was working with Mr. Murphy, shut the belt off at once and called for help from the bottom. The Mine Manager, Mr. Harold Hancock, and Mr. J. C. Barger, Chief Electrician, arrived at the Belt Head in approximately five minutes. They cut the belt and removed Mr. Murphy, he was breathing but was unconscious at this time. He was immediately transported to the top where he was taken by ambulance to Doctors Hospital in Harrisburg, Illinois. Mr. Murphy expired at approximately 12:30 p.m., on September 6, 1974.
 
June 17, 19012, Patrick Murphy, of Ledford, miner, aged 21 years, was severely crushed about the head and body by a fall of slate in his working room in the Davenport Coal Co.'s mine, Ledford, Saline county. The deceased and his father were working together; a fall of slate had occurred about 50 feet back of their working face the night before and had covered up the drilling tools. Murphy, Jr., was working trying to locate his tools, when a piece of slate fell on him, causing his death. The slate that fell was seven feet long, five feet wide and from two to four inches thick. He died four hours after the accident.

December 21, 19078, Patrick Murry, of Harrisburg, miner, aged 40 years, single, employed at the O'Gara Coal Company's mine No. 4 at Harrisburg, Saline County, was killed instantly by falling slate. Deceased was in his room eating his lunch. The piece of slate was 4½ by 13 feet and 10 inches thick.

February 12, 19088, Jasper Nealan, of Eldorado, aged 50 years, single, miner, employed at the National Mining Company's mine, Eldorado, Saline County, was, with two other men, opening up a fire that had been sealed up; two of the men had safety lamps, Nealan went in after them with an open lamp; when he reached the first open cross-cut, the gas from the lighted lamp exploded, blowing him against the rib, fracturing his skull.

October 19, 192731, John Nozzy, of Muddy, miner, age 44 years, single, died from injuries received the day before, in Wasson Coal Company's No. i mine. Deceased suffered a severe rupture caused from lifting a heavy lump of coal onto a car which he was loading. He was taken to the hospital and operated upon, but without beneficial result.

Deceased sat down upon the gob near the face of the entry to await the cleaning up of the coal so as to take the machine into the working place when a rock fell breaking his back. He leaves a widow and three children.

June 2, 192020, Stanton Owens, of Eldorado, trapper, age 17 years, single, was killed in Wasson Coal Company'[s No. 1 mine, Wasson. Deceased and nine other men were coming out on cage at quitting time. When the cage had ascended about 100 feet he fell into bunting and back down the shaft. He lived about three hours.

October 27, 191112, Fred Phillips, of Athens, Ohio; driver, aged 21 years, single, working in the Wasson Coal Co.'s mine, Harrisburg, Saline County, was killed by falling on machine wire. The deceased was coming in on the parting and it seems that he intended to couple the car to the rest of the trip, when he either stumbled or fell onto a machine wire, striking on his chin. He was between two cars, an elbow on each car, with his chin on the live wire, when he was found, dead, by a miner.
 
PICKERING
January 22, 19023, George Pickering, of Ledford, miner, aee 15 years, was severely crushed about the head and body by a fall of slate at the face of his working room in the Davenport Coal Co.'s mine, Ledford, Saline county. The deceased was working with his father; both were loading a pit-car when the slate fell, crushing the boy's head so severely that he died 15 hours after the accident. The father escaped uninjured.
 
April 9, 191717, Johnathan Pickering, of Dorrisville, loader, age 38 years, married, was killed in O'Gara Coal Company's No. 9 mine, Harrisburg, Saline County. Deceased was helping place a derailed car on the track when he fell striking his head against a rock, causing death eight hours later.

September 26, 19078, Oscar Poland, of Eldorado, shot-firer, aged 22 years, single, and Molad Rutherford, of Eldorado, shot-firer, aged 40 years, married, both employed at the No. 1 mine of the National Mining Company, Eldorado, Saline County, were suffocated. These men had the fuses lighted in five rooms; the shots were going off in rapid succession; one of the shots, however, was a dead hole, which caused a windy shot, and an explosion followed. Death was caused by suffocation. Rutherford leaves a widow.

September 24, 19078, George Prichett, of Ledford, driver, aged 22 years, single, employed by the Saline County Coal Company, Ledford, Saline County, was killed while waiting at the double parting for empty cars to come in from the shaft bottom; the cars did not come as expected and deceased went into a cross-cut and laid down to wait. A piece of slate weighing about a hundred pounds fell on his head, crushing his skull. The accident occurred on the main south entry, about 600 feet from the shaft bottom.

February 22, 193539, Jess Purcell, of Eldorado, construction worker, aged 41 years, married, killed in collision of motors in mine No. 10 of the Sahara Coal Co., leaving widow and two children.
 
October 22, 191314, Orval Purcell, of Grayson, fireman, aged 28 years, married, died from injuries received eight days before, while preparing a boiler for cleaning, at the Saline County Coal Company's No. 6 mine, Grayson, Saline County. Deceased was forcing the man-head in with an old car axle and when it gave way the hot water rushed out upon him, resulting as described above.
