      Randolph County is a county located in the southern part of the state of Illinois.
            38.05° N, 89.82° W
In 2000 the population was 33,893, and in 2010, the population was 33,476.
 
      The county seat of Randolph County, Illinois is Chester.
 
      Randolph County was organized in 1795 out of a part of St. Clair County, and is named in honor of Edmund Randolph, Governor of Virginia.
 
      Randolph County has precincts rather than townships; there are 21 precincts :

RANDOLPH COUNTY
      Last year there were 9 mines in this county, 4 of which had escapements. This year 10 mines are reported, 7 having escapement shafts in use, and 2 in process of construction. Three of the mines are hoisting with steam, and another is preparing for it, the engine having been purchased some time since. There has been one fan erected in the county at Coulterville.

      The mine was included on the 1875 atlas on land owned by W. T. Wylie. The shaft was labeled on the WPA map as the Old Adams Mine.
      There was no escape shaft. The 1884 Coal Report included a paragraph about most mines. The paragraph on the Dobbins Mine indicated that the mine would have to be shut down if several unsafe conditions were not remedied.
      The mine apparently closed because of an unwillingness or lack of ability to put in necessary safety enhancements, including an escape shaft and a rope stronger than hemp for the hoisting shaft. The traveling ways were also too narrow.
 
The last production was reported in 1885.
