      The Orion Coal Company of DuQuoin, Perry county has abandoned its No. 1 mine, known as Jupiter No. 1, and taken the washer and placed it at its No. 5 mine.

      The Forresters Coal Co., has opened out a new mine at Duquoin, Perry county.

      The Forester Coal Co., Duquoin. has put in a new engine 20 x 36 inch cylinders, a conical drum 8 feet in diameter: the boilers are 6 x 18 feet with seventy 4-inch flues. The fan is of the Guibal pattern, 20 feet in diameter.

      The Paradise Coal and Coke Company, DuQuoin, Perry county, has installed one K. W. dynamo, two 10 ton motors, two new 150 H. P. boilers, also one hundred new two ton mine cars.

      The Paradise Coal and Coke Company has installed one 100 K. W. dynamo and one 150 K. W. dynamo; two 150 H. P. boilers, 72 inch by 18 feet, 70 -- 4 inch flues, two 10 tons haulage motors; the old pit cars were 1½ tons and they have put in 40 new ones 2½ tons and laid the mine entries with 40 pound rails.

      The following are the improvements at the Paradise mine, Duquoin: One 200 H.P. boiler, installed by the Frost Manufacturing Co., Galesburg, Ill.; one 30 H.P. engine to run a force draft system for boilers; one 300-ton chute coal bin for locomotives; one 30 H.P. Westinghouse motor for elevating coal into bins, installed by the Link-Belt Manufacturing Co.; two 5-ton Goodman motors for the mine; two Goodman mining machines, electric; one double-friction Drunn car puller, driven by two Liggerwood engines, size 7 x 9; one engine lathe for shop.

      The Equitable Coal Co., Duquoin, Perry county, has erected a new steel tower.

New Mines
      The Majestic Coal and Coke Co., Duquoin. Perry county, has opened and equipped a new mine four and one-half miles southeast of Duquoin. The shaft is one and one-quarter miles south of the line of the Illinois Central R. R. from St. Louis, with a switch from the main line, having yard room for100 coal cars. The sinking of this shaft was begun July 5, 1904, and completed in January, 1905; the depth of the shaft is 403 feet to a seam of coal 9¼ feet thick. The output of the mine is now from 1.300 to 1,400 tons a day. and steadily increasing. The mine has a steel tower; the tower house is 45 x 49 feet; the engine room is 30 x 40 feet, with two hoisting- engines, 24 x 26 inch cylinders, each 3OO horse power, and conical drums 6 x 8 feet; there are two boilers, 6 x 18 feet, with heater attachment. The powder house is built of brick with a storage capacity for 3,000 kegs of powder; there is also a corrugated iron building with concrete floor, having tanks for storing oils. The machine and blacksmith shops are fully up to date, being fully equipped for doing all necessary work and repairs. A wash house for the men, heated by radiators and with all necessary conveniences is furnished; also a barn with forty stalls for miners' horses. A daily passenger train service to and from the mine is supplied. The mine is supplied with a Jeffrey shaker screen, having a 2,000 tons capacity, a Christy box car loader, two pair of 100 ton Standard scales, with 42 inch beams: one of the scales has an automatic weighing attachment. The ventilating fan is 20 feet in diameter, capacity 100,000 cubic feet per minute, made by the Blakeslee Manufacturing company, Duquoin. There are two self dumping cages: the mine cars hold 1¾ tons of coal.

      The Majestic Coal and Coke Company, DuQuoin, Perry county, has installed three 4½ ton gasoline motors, also a small dynamo to furnish lights both in the mine and in the buildings on the surface.

      The Majestic Coal Co., Duquoin, has installed one new Westinghouse generator 250 K.W., direct connected to a 4-valve 22 x 24 Chuse engine; two 3-ton Goodman gathering motors, and two 5-ton Goodman motors; ten Sullivan short wall mining machines; one car puller, driven by Erie engine, 8 x 10.

      Majestic Coal & Coke Co., of DuQuoin, put in a tipple, shaker frame, and shaker screens driven by an electric motor; rebuilt surface tracks, installed new track scales and new water heater, and rebuilt fuel conveyor from tipple to boiler-room. Improvements on bottom consists of steel and concrete supports on both sides; an automatic caging machine with automatic stops on the cages.

Prospective Mines
      The White Ash Coal Company is opening a new mine, four miles south of Duquoin.

New Mines
      The White Ash Coal Company has completed sinking a mine, four miles south of DuQuoin, Perry county. The Company began sinking October 24, 1907, and completed the work November 21, 1907. This shaft is 85 feet to a coal seam 7 feet 4 inches thick. The seam is No. 6 of the geological section. The shaft is 9 by 4 feet in the clear, and timbered with 4 by 12 inch white oak timbers.
      After the sinking of the shaft had been completed it was closed down, and has remained closed down up to the present time.

Mines Closed Down Temporarily.
      The White Ash Coal Company of DuQuoin, Perry county has not hoisted any coal; the mine has been sunk over one year and is standing idle.

Improvements.
      The Security Coal Company, Duquoin, has built an oil and supply house 32 feet by 22 feet, a barn 70 feet by 30 feet, a first aid house 14 feet by 20 feet, a pipe and lumber house 20 feet by 30 feet, a car-puller house 15 feet by 15 feet, a boxcar-loader house 20 feet by 15 feet, a pumphouse 10 feet by 10 feet, made a concrete dam at the pond 50 feet long and 2 feet thick, put in 5,000 feet of new track, using 60-pound rails.
      The company has also installed a drag from tipple to boilers; a Deming electric mine pump, 3-inch suction, 2½ inch discharge; an electric Christie boxcar loader and car puller with 6 x 10 engine; a drag engine, 15 H.P.; a new lathe for the shop; a pair of Straiter automatic scales; 17 feet addition to the screens; two new long wall electric chain machines; two 5-ton Goodman motors; 100 new pit cars; a Dean duplex steam pump, 5-inch suction, 4-inch discharge, 8 x 10 cylinder; a new shaker engine, 40 H.P.; a new generator 200 K.W., or 175 volts, and a new 300 H.P. engine.

      The Superior Coal Co., of DuQuoin, has abandoned its old shaft and sunk another one, one mile northwest of DuQuoin, on the Cairo Shorth Line R. R. The shft is sixty-two feet deep and the coal six feet thick, with black slate roof. The company is now putting in the machinery and boilers and erecting tower and buildings.

      The Wilson Coal Company, Cutler, Perry county, has erected a new head frame 55 feet high, which is constructed of 4 by 12 inch oak timbers, securely bolted together. The company has also built a new fan house.

New Mines.
      The White Walnut Coal Co., Pinekneyville, Perry county, has sunk a shaft on the Illinois Central railroad, one-half mile south of the depot of this road. It is the intention of the company to have its shaft equipped for a capacity of about 1,200 tons per day, which will be the largest in Perry county.

Winkle Coal Mine

New Mines
      The Joseph Winkle Mining & Realty Co.. has sunk a new shaft at Craigs, Perry county. This location is a few miles northwest of Pinckneyville, on the Illinois Central railroad. The depth of the shaft is 257 feet to the top of the coal, which is seven feet thick. The company suggests that this is No. 3 seam of the general section; an 18-inch seam and a three-foot seam are above the one first named. The tipple is built of steel: a three-track shaker screen is erected: a battery of four boilers have been installed, with a large first motion Ottumwa engine and a seven-foot drum, also an air compressor. The power plant and powder house are fire proof.
