The county seat of Perry County, Illinois is Pinckneyville.

Perry County was formed in 1827 out of Jackson and Randolph Counties, and was named in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry who defeated the British fleet at the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812.

Perry County has precincts rather than townships; there are 27 voting precincts :
Beaucoup, Cutler, Du Quoin 1-12, Pinckneyville 1-8, Sunfield, Swanwick, Tamaroa 1-2, Willisville

Some of the Cities, Towns, Villages and Communities are :
Conant, Cutler, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, St. Johns, Swanwick, Winkle

Perry County's topography also features many "strip cut" lakes, lakes left behind following above-ground coal mining. Lakes at two of the county's chief recreation areas, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and Pyramid State Recreation Area, were formed this way.

Perry County, Illinois Coal Mines in 1885
1885 Annual Coal Report 2
There are 14 mines in this county this year, which is one less than were reported last year. Of these, three are idle, and all have escapement shafts except the Galium mine, which has sunk one as far as the rock, immediately over the coal, but can go no farther for want of funds. The owners of one mine were obliged to enlarge their escapement shaft. There are three fans in operation in the county.
