The Alden Coal Company's shaft No. 7, located at Mathersville, commenced operation in January, 1910.
Mathersville is a new mining town, located on the north side of the Edwards river in Mercer county. The proven coal area contains probably 1,500 acres, about equally divided between the Coal Valley Mining and Alden Coal Companies.
The new shafts of the two companies [Coal Valley Mining Company's mine No. 3 & Alden Coal Company's shaft No. 7] are located less than half a mile apart. A new railroad the "Rock Island Southern has been built to carry the product of the mines to market." This road commences near Preemption on the line of the C. R. I. & P. R. R. whose lines it has under lease from Rock Island to Preemption and runs south a distance of about 5 miles to the mines at Mathersville and continuing south to the present terminus of the road at Monmouth in Warren county. - Damage by Water -
On Saturday, May 13, 1916, water from old abandoned workings of many, many years standing, broke into the Alden Coal Company's No. 7 mine, located at Matherville, throwing 150 men out of employment for nearly two months, and at the same time creating an expensive as well as unpleasant experience for the company and its local officials. As no maps or records of these old workings referred to were in existence, it was impossible for anyone to determine the exact location or distance from the active workings of the mine, but the occurrence was not wholly unexpected, as nearly everyone familiar with this field was aware of the presence of quite a body of water. It was first noticed coming into the mine by the shot firers who were the only men in the mine.

In January, 1907, a sudden rise of the water in Camp creek flooded the old Ellis slope, and from the old workings thereof the water ran into the workings of the Coal Valley Mining Company's shaft No. 1, located at Cable, Mercer county. This put the mine out of action. After pumping night and day for a month the mine was practically cleared of water, but mining was not resumed. It is quite likely that operations will again be commenced in the fall of 1907 and continued until the spring of 1908, about which time the remaining coal will be exhausted and the mine worked out.

- Shaft Buildings Burned -
Several buildings of the local mine, operated by Alfred Lilliman, at Cable, Mercer coiunty, were burned down Dec. 22, 1903. The fire started about 4 o'clock in the morning. It destoyed the gin-ring, boiler house, tower, and about eight feet of the top part of the shaft lining. The fan, fan-house and escape shaft were uninjured. The fire was probably caused by a spark from the night watchman's lamp, as he went below to look after the pump, as the fire seemed to have started soon afterwards. The towere was rebuilt and coal again hoisted Jan. 13, 1904. The loss was about $1,500. uninsured.
