1902 Coal Report16 - Prospective Mines
A party of capitalists have sunk a shaft between Elmwood and Yates City. The shaft is located in Knox county, on a line of the C., B. & Q. R. R. The shaft is 90 feet deep, seam No. 5. Coal will be ready for shipment, in limited quantities, in October or November, 1902.

1903 Coal Report17 - New Mines
The Yates City Coal company has sunk a new shaft on the line of the C., B. & Q. R. R., about 1½ miles east of Yates City, Knox county, and commenced operations early in 1903; this seam is No. 5 of the Illinois section and is about 3½ feet thick. The conditions at this mine were not satisfactory, however, and the company sunk the shaft to a lower seam, probably No. 2; this seam is about 2 feet 8 inches thick, and, as usual with this seam, the coal is of good quality. The machinery, including a shaker screen and ventilating fan, is new and up to date. It is quite difficult, however, to operate successfully a thin seam of coal, especially when in close proximity, as in this case, to coal seams nearly double the thickness.

1906 Coal Report20 - Mines Abandoned
The Yates City Coal company's mine, located near Yates City, on the Galesburg and Peoria branch of the C., B. & Q. R. R., in Knox county, was closed during the summer of 1905, and did not resume business until May, 1906, and then as a local mine only, and is now being operated by the Bowman Brothers of Yates City.

1894 Coal Report7 - Prospective Mines - A new company, styled the Galesburg Coal Company, is putting down a shaft 2½ miles south of Victoria, in Knox county. Coal was found 55 feet below the surface.

1897 Coal Report11
The Galesburg Coal Co's mines. No. 1 and 2, situated at Etherly, Knox county, have been closed down for the last year and a half, for unknown causes. It is thus seen that the coal business in this district with both miners and operators is any thing but prosperous. During the last year there have been no marked improvements at any of the mines in this district. Through the wetness of the season some of the surface local mines were shut up while others had so much water to handle that the output of coal has been reduced below that of last year.

1885 Coal Report4 - Knox County
A new shaft has been sunk during the year by the Galesburg Brick and Tile Company. The shaft is seventy feet in depth; the coal is two feet thick, of fair quality when clean, but it has abundance of pyrites of iron -- or sulphur -- running through it. The number of the seam is mere guess work ; it has been tabulated as No. 2 on account of the resemblance to the coal and other conditions of the Abingdon mine. About two feet of the fire-clay underlying the coal is taken out, to be used in the manufacture of brick and tile. The workings are opened out on the double entry plan, and are in good condition. The coal and clay are raised by steam power, a small single engine being used for that purpose. The mine is located about a mile and a half east of Galesburg, and began operations in April, 1885.
