Reference Sources
For purposes of History and Genealogy, we have limited this compilation to Underground Coal Mines.
Mine Type 1
Underground mines are either "shaft," "slope," or "drift" which refers to the type of opening used to remove the coal from the mine.
In shaft mines the coal is removed through a vertical shaft.
Slope designates mines in which the coal is removed via a sloping incline from the ground surface to the mining level. In slope mines, miners and equipment may use either the slope or a vertical shaft to get into the mine.
A drift mine is an underground mine that is excavated where the coal outcrops in the side of a bluff or the highwall of a surface mine.
The mine type for surface mines is "strip" because these mines are more commonly called "strip mines."

During the terrific wind and rain storm of May 2, 1902, in the vicinity of Farmington, Fulton county, huge volumes of water poured over the ground under which Newsam Bros., mine at that place is located. The water flowed down the shaft, washing away about twelve feet of the surface, carrying the cage and dirt to the bottom of the shaft, closing it in. Forty-two miners were at work in the mine at the time of the storm, but they were all able to leave the mine by way of the escapement shaft.

Norris Mine.
This shaft is located at Norris, on the C., B. & Q. R. R. The seam worked here is No. 6, reached at a depth of 125 feet, and averages 4 feet 7 inches in thickness, when clear of "horse-backs," which are not as numerous here as is usual in this seam. This mine has been operated by so many different parties that it was steadily going from bad to worse, and I was about to apply for an injunction to have it closed as being unsafe, when it was leased by Mr. Taylor Williams, and he is now fitting up the whole place in accordance with the requirements of the law. A four foot fan is now furnishing plenty of air, there being only 25 men engaged in the mine. The amount of air will be increased as the improvements progress.
W. J. Spencer, Supt.; Wm. Evans, Mine Manager.
