For purposes of History and Genealogy, we have limited this compilation to Underground Coal Mines.
Mine Type 1
Underground mines are either "shaft," "slope," or "drift" which refers to the type of opening used to remove the coal from the mine.
In shaft mines the coal is removed through a vertical shaft.
Slope designates mines in which the coal is removed via a sloping incline from the ground surface to the mining level. In slope mines, miners and equipment may use either the slope or a vertical shaft to get into the mine.
A drift mine is an underground mine that is excavated where the coal outcrops in the side of a bluff or the highwall of a surface mine.
The mine type for surface mines is "strip" because these mines are more commonly called "strip mines."

St. David Mines.
There are two mines at this place, owned by Taylor Williams. The roof in these mines is very fragile, and in falling it liberates water very freely, making the roads very wet, the drainage being defective. Otherwise they are in good condition, with good ventilation from an eight-foot fan located at No. 1, the older mine, which ventilates the newer mine also, they being connected by an entry a third of a mile in length. I directed safety catches and covers to be put on the cages at the new mine, also a brake on the drum.

New Mines
The Monmouth Coal Co., has sunk a new shaft four miles north of Canton, Fulton county, on the C. B, & Q. R. R. The company is now building the top works and putting in the machinery; it is expected the mine will be ready for operation in a short time. This mine is being fitted up to handle a large output of coal; it will have shaker screens and all modern improvements. The escapement shaft is now being sunk and communication will be made between the two shafts by the time the top works are completed.

1902 Annual Coal Report 13
New Mines.
The Monmouth Coal Co.'s mine, Canton, Fulton county, is located on the C. B. & Q. R. R. 3½ miles north of the city. Work of sinking the main shaft began July 17, 1901. The shaft is 8 x 16 feet. The No. 6 seam of coal was found 80 feet below the surface, and the No. 5 seam 150 feet below. The shaft is curbed with 3 x 8 inch timbers for the first 50 feet, and from there to the bottom with 2 x 12 inch timbers having double ends with a space of 15 inches between; this space can be used to conduct pipes into the mine, the main object being to enable the end guides to be securely bolted.
The tower or head gear of the mine is constructed of frame work; the main posts are 12 x 12 inches and 60 feet long, braced with timbers of the same size, securely fastened with cross rods of 1¼ inch iron, with turn buckles. The mine is equipped with self-dumping cage and weigh pan. The method used in separating the coal is the shaker screen process which makes six different grades: lump, mine run, egg, nut, pea and slack. The engine and boiler house is a frame building having a gravel roof. The size of the building is 46 x 50 feet with a partition between the boiler room and engine room. The steam power consists of two horizontal boilers 60-inch shell, 24 feet long, and an 80-horse power double hoisting engine, friction clutch, all built by the Ottumwa Iron Works.
The air and escapement shaft is 6 x 10 feet and is equipped with a 12-foot fan; it also has a stairway at an angle of 45 degrees.
The company has plotted a town site, the name of which is Brereton; and has built 25 cottages of four rooms each, with out buildings. The company is drilling an artesian well to supply the town with a water works system. This is one of the finest modern mining towns in the State.

1906 Annual Coal Report 17
Improvements
The Monmouth Coal Co. of Brereton, Fulton county, has installed a new 20-foot fan to take the place of a smaller one formerly used, which will greatly improve the ventilation.

1907 Annual Coal Report 18
Improvements.
During the year the Monmouth Coal Company located at Brereton, Fulton county, has installed an electric haulage system in its mine; the plant consists of a 150 K. W. generator and a 10-ton motor, with over head trolley; the generator house is brick 20 by 22 feet. The company has also put in one new boiler 72 inches in diameter, and 18 feet long, with 70 four-inch flues making in all a battery of four boilers. In preparing for the electric haulage in the mine 6,000 feet of 16 pound rails were taken up and replaced by 30 pound rails, laid on ties 6 inches by 6 inches, 5 feet long. The slate in the entries was brushed down for a distance of 3,000 feet. This haulage was completed and put in operation about July 1, 1907, and is giving entire satisfaction; the management expect in a very short time, to bring the output to 1,500 tons a day. The plant was installed by the Goodman Manufacturing Company of Chicago. Ill.

1912 Annual Coal Report 23
Improvements.
Monmouth Coal Company, Brereton; the ventilation in this mine has been greatly improved by the installation of an auxiliary fan at a distance of 9,000 feet (the way the air travels) from the main fan.

1916 Annual Coal Report 27
Improvements.
The Monmouth Coal Mining Company, Brereton, Fulton County, has just completed sinking and connecting a new air shaft at the working face of the mine, a distance of about one and one-fourth miles from the hoisting shaft. A new electric 110-volt generator, to furnish lights in the mine and around the surface buildings has been installed, replacing an old Edison type. A new booster fan to aid in distributing the air to the several points where needed, has been put in.

Improvements
The Canton Coal & Gas Company has put in a 10-foot fan at their mine which has added largely to the volume of air. The system of ventilation previous was with a steam-jet; the boiler power being insufficient for all purposes drowned the mine, and the jet did not give very much of an air current and the miners suffered for want of air.

P. P. Chapman's Mine.
This shaft is located at Farmington, on the C., B. & Q. R. R., at a depth of 165 feet. The condition of the mine has been greatly improved during the last year, the owners having cleaned and enlarged the air count .... the air stoppings and doors, and erected a seven-foot fan. This mine makes black-damp freely, but when the fan is kept running the air is good. More effective safety catches have been applied to the cages, and guards have been placed around the openings.

This mine is located at Cuba, on the Wabash R. R., and furnishes coal exclusively for locomotives on the railroad. This being an old shaft, the engine and boiler were not set with a view of complying with the present laws regulating such matters, as they are too close to the shaft opening. The traveling road to the escape shaft was impassable, but subsequently cleared up. The ventilating current measured at the downcast 150 cubic feet per man, but was highly charged with black damp, coming from old waste before reaching men.
