Calhoun County, Illinois

      Calhoun County is a county located in the central pat of the state of Illinois.
As of the 2000 census, the population was 5,084; the population was 5,167 at the 2007 official US Census estimate.
The county seat is Hardin.
 
      Calhoun County was organized in 1825.
            It was named for Vice President John C. Calhoun.
 

Calhoun Coal Mine
The legal description lists this as :    Calhoun County -
Township 14 South, Range 2 West, Section 1
This was a drift mine.
      A "Drift" type mine is is an underground mine that is excavated where the coal outcrops in the side of a bluff or the highwall of a surface mine. The mine type for surface mines is "strip" because these mines are more commonly called "strip mines."1
